Trauma

Issues we work with: Trauma

Trauma

Trauma is the result of an extremely distressing, abusive or devastating life event/s – or period in one’s life – that is often associated with a range of debilitating, intensified and persistent emotions and behaviour, such as sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shock, and fear.

These emotions can be overwhelming and can often lead to adverse effects, such as difficulty sleeping, health concerns, social withdrawal, self-compromise, and an overall compromised capacity to function in one’s self-esteem, relationships and other life pursuits.

Due to the nature of the effects of trauma, it can be extremely difficult to generally cope across a range of situations, which can lead to feelings of helplessness.

While it is normal for traumatic experiences to cause emotional hardship, getting support and learning ways to cope through distressing life events can help with managing and eventually overcoming the significant barriers and psychological responses relating to traumatic events.

Speak to our intake team about how our psychologists can provide you with the skills and assistance to cope with your unique situation through an individualised therapeutic process.
