Narrative Therapy

Our Approaches: Narrative Therapy

What is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy is a therapeutic approach which focuses on people’s perspectives of their lives in the format of a story.

Narrative therapy takes the view that individuals give meaning to each of their personal experiences through the stories they create and carry throughout their life, which guide their behaviours as well as how they view themselves in the outer world. The stories that one creates can be positive, however, others may be negative or ‘problem saturated’, and our stories tend to influence the way we live and contend with our lives. This therapeutic approach aims to assist individuals in altering their problem focused stories, which are a likely contributor to distress or challenge, into more productive ones.

What does Narrative Therapy involve?

  • Working with a psychologist to develop awareness of maladaptive stories that may be having a negative influence
  • Exploring how one’s stories may be operating in the broader context of one’s life in order to understand its impact and influence on actions and choices.
  • Learning how to accept alternative stories into one’s life that are more positively framed and better align with the individual’s true views and values.

If this sounds like a therapeutic approach that might work for you or one that you would like to hear more about, speak to our intake team about which of our psychologists is able to discuss how this approach may be helpful for your situation and your therapeutic goals.
