Substance Abuse refers to the excessive or compulsive intake of psychoactive or neurochemical substances. Typical characteristics of substance abuse arise when the desire to take the substance grows and controlling the use becomes more difficult. Fighting the urge to take the substance may seem impossible, even when one knows they are harming themselves.

Prolonged substance use can lead to an increased tolerance, meaning larger amounts are needed to feel the same effects. Withdrawals may also be experienced, making it extremely difficult to gain control.

As is the case with many addictive patterns of behaviour, substance abuse can be harmful to one’s physical health and mental wellbeing. There may be disruption to day to day life, impacting relationships, social activities and hobbies, work, and one’s financial situation.
