Social Worker

Katherine is a social worker with a PhD in Social Work from Melbourne University (2017) a Master’s degree in Social Work from Melbourne University (2005), a Bachelor of Social Work from Monash University (1992) and a Bachelor of Arts from Melbourne University (1990).

Katherine has worked for many years as committed advocate of child safety and has provided counselling and support to victims/survivors of child sexual abuse.

Katherine’s has held several CEO roles of influential organisations in the community sector with a primary focus on the protection and wellbeing of children. Katherine also appeared as a subject matter expert witness on grooming at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Approach

Katherine works in a culturally sensitive, compassionate and respectful manner and specialises in providing counselling with a focus on the following:

Katherine engages in strength based approaches to counselling drawing on multiple therapeutic models including Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Narrative Therapy.

At the core of Katherine’s approach to working with clients is a systems theory focus which takes a holistic approach to working with an individual. A systems approach is informed by the understanding that a person is impacted by unique individual factors as well as by extrinsic societal factors such as community perceptions of gender and gender roles, socio- economic factors, power structures, belief systems, institutions, policies, politics and the legal system.
Katherine also offers clinical supervision to social workers and has a special interest in providing support and supervision to those who are in leadership roles in the community sector.
